Part of the Wonder Women Festival and Wellcome Collection’s Sexology Season, an evening of art, live music, performance and debate. From Sarah Lucas’s latest show to performative publishing duo, Ladies of the Press*, join the gallery as it questions how society views women and how women view themselves.
6pm-7.15pm
Panel Discussion: How do we see ourselves?
Breaking through the image barrier Join Professor Carol Mavor, award-winning comedian and columnist Shazia Mirza and journalist Reni Eddo-Lodge for a discussion about the representation of women and their sexuality, both historically and today, the impact of gender stereotypes fuelled by mainstream media and what the future might hold.
6pm-8pm
Performance: Ladies of the Press*
Appearing in matching costumes and never without a theatrical setup, the performative publishing duo Ladies of the Press* will be presenting their signature piece, Live Press: a theatrical performance that features an extremely democratic ‘press desk’, creating an A5 zine from scratch in a matter of two hours! Inspired by the theme of Sexology, the resulting zine can include anything from on-the-spot interviews with organisers and exhibitors, interactions with the audience as well as ‘submissions’ (responsive writing/drawing, or even performance!) from the audience.
7.45pm & 8.30pm
Performance: The Fig Leaf Wars - 2 x 15 minute performances
A human sized pair of genitals, dance, argue, struggle and love. A 15 Minute dance between a vulva and a penis - expressing sexual conflict, joy and the perpetual cycle of misunderstanding and trying again to understand one another.
8pm-8.30pm
Curators Tour: Sarah Lucas exhibition
Join curator, Amy George on a tour of Sarah Lucas’s exhibition as she discusses Lucas’s role as a female artist and the representation of sexuality in her work.
8.30pm-9pm
*Music: Bernard + Edith
Closing the night will be a performance from hotly-tipped Manchester based electronic-pop duo Bernard + Edith. Already firmly established within the city’s underground music scene, Greta ‘Edith’ Carroll and Nick ‘Bernard’ Delap draw on influences ranging from Fever Ray and Portishead via Cocteau Twins, David Lynch and Kate Bush to create the most deliciously dark art-pop/soul.
